Emergency Action Checklist
Critical safety steps while waiting for our dispatch crew to arrive on site.
What You Should Do:
- • Stop the Water: Shut off the main water valve immediately if the source is internal (burst pipe, appliance leak).
- • Cut the Power: Turn off electricity to affected rooms at the breaker box if water is rising near outlets.
- • Protect Furniture: Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs on wet carpet to prevent stains.
- • Retrieve Items: Move loose rugs, documents, electronics, and valuables to dry, safe areas.
What You Should NOT Do:
- • Don't Use Household Vacs: Never use a standard home vacuum to extract water. It creates electrical shock hazards and destroys the appliance.
- • Don't Enter Flooded Rooms: Avoid standing water if the electrical power has not been fully disconnected.
- • Don't Turn on Fixtures: Do not turn on ceiling lights, fans, or appliances if water has seeped into ceilings or walls.
- • Don't Leave Wet Fabrics: Do not leave books, wet towels, or damp clothing piled up. They will bleed dye and mold rapidly.
What You Should Do:
- • Limit Traffic: Keep movement in the house to a minimum to prevent soot particles from embedding into carpets/sofas.
- • Keep Hands Clean: Wear gloves or wash hands frequently to avoid spreading soot onto walls, woodwork, and fabrics.
- • Ventilate If Safe: If weather is dry and safe, open windows to ventilate smoke residues and reduce odor.
- • Clean Refrigerator: If power is off, empty the refrigerator/freezer contents and prop the doors open to prevent mold.
What You Should NOT Do:
- • Don't Wash Walls: Never attempt to wash soot-damaged walls or ceilings with home cleaning solutions. Soot will smear and stain permanently.
- • Don't Eat Exposed Food: Do not consume food, beverages, or canned items that were exposed to high heat, smoke, or fire extinguisher chemicals.
- • Don't Turn on HVAC: Do not run your heating or air conditioning unit. Soot will get sucked into ducts and contaminate the entire property.
- • Don't Clean Appliances: Avoid cleaning carpets, upholstery, or electrical appliances without professional guidance.
